If you target local customers and deal with those customers face to face, you probably need a Google My Business listing. However, if you do not deal with customers face to face, you probably do not need a Google My Business listing.

If you do need a Google My Business listing, there are different types of listing and you must choose the right type for your business.

If you deal with customers face to face, you need a Google My Business listing.

How Google categorizes your small business

  • Local Brick and Mortar Business (customers must visit your premises)
  • Service Area Business (you visit your customers premises)
  • Hybrid Local and Service Area Business (such as a restaurant where customers sit at tables but can also get food delivered)
  • Online Business (you don’t meet customers in person)

Most importantly, some businesses need a Google My Business listing, and some do not.

Businesses that need a Google My Business listing…

Customers visit you

Do customers come through your door? If you have a kerbside business with signage, and customers must come through your door to receive their goods or services, you need a Google My Business listing.

You visit your customers

You also need a Google My Business listing if customers do NOT come through your door but, you visit your customers premises to deliver your goods or service. This means you are a service area business. If you are a service area business, you operate from a building without signage and customers do NOT visit your premises in person. You visit them.

Customers visit you and you visit your customers

If customers visit you, and you visit your customers, you’re a hybrid business and you need a Google My Business listing.

If you do not deal with customers face to face you probably do not need a Google My Business listing.

Remote online workers

A virtual assistant or social media manager might choose to work remotely. They can work with local clients or clients in any country. If they never deal with customers face to face. They do not need a Google My Business listing.

Online shops

If you have a shop that only operates online, and customers cannot visit your premises, you do not need a Google My business listing.

If you do not target local customers and do not deal with customers face to face, you do not need a Google My Business listing.
